Mike started his journey in the cattle business at the age of twelve, working on a ranch in Westwold BC. That continued each spring, summer and fall until he completed college at Olds Alberta and moved north of Edmonton to run a mixed farm. Then, coming back to BC to run a small feedlot out of Vernon where he met his future wife and was married. This is when the real journey began. After a few years driving for a local livestock hauling company, Mike got his first dealer’s license and struck out on his own. Mike spent 27 years putting on miles to various auction barns developing many relationships that remain today. With these relationships, he partnered in a livestock hauling company with three local trucks and 2 cattle liners with coverage of western Canada and the northern US. With other partners they also ran a feedyard in Armstrong with a capacity of 5000 head. In 2016 when the local auction barn closed its doors, Mike and another order buyer started a couple buying stations with locations in Armstrong and Kamloops. Mike always enjoyed the direct contact with producers, so this was a perfect fit with the way he liked to do business. With his son Cody Nikolaisen and Jent Hoekstra coming on board, Mike looks forward to continuing to providing that personal touch to the livestock industry. Come to the office, have a coffee and discuss the market.

Jent knew at the early stages of his life growing up in the Netherlands that the agricultural and meat industry was something he wanted to pursue his career in. At the age of 19 he graduated from the meat and plant management college in Zwolle (the Netherlands) and decided it was time to move to Canada — the land of cattle and agriculture. A few years of being employed as a feedlot manager and being a herdsman on various Dairy farms gave him the opportunity to become a partner in a startup company (Family Meats) in Ponoka. Growing this slaughter plant and wholesale company to 3 locations it was time to sell this company and move with his wife and 3 daughters to beautiful British Columbia. This is where Jent became a consultant for a meat wholesale company and feedlot located in Grindrod. Joining forces with Mike Nikolaisen and Cody Nikolaisen has been a great transition and Jent is looking forward to many years of collaborating and improving the movement of dairy and beef cattle supporting the local farming community with opening market channels for all classes of livestock.
